The Secret Caribbean

At the center of St. Kitts stands the spectacular cloud-fringed peak of Mount Liamuiga (pronounced Lee-a-mweega), a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. The rugged mountains descend to the island's lush cultivated valleys and to the capital Basseterre, which lies on the sheltered southernwestern shore. Continuing further south, a peninsula of rolling hills and golden sand beaches stretch across Frigate Bay and Salt Pond toward Nevis Peak, the central mountain of St. Kitts' smaller island sister, Nevis, only two miles away. Nevis famous for its long stretches of palmlined beach and its historic capital Charlestown was once known as Queen of the Caribees. Nevis has a population of only 9,000; St. Kitts, with 35,000 people, is a bit larger. Far more numerous however, are the 125,000 elusive green vervet monkeys, which can be found in the rain forests of both islands.

Nature is held here in high regard as by law, no building may be taller than the surrounding palm trees.

Activities include internationally ranked golf courses, hiking through the rain forests, fishing, boating and diving or snorkeling through underwater reefs and unexplored wrecks. Check out the many historic points of interest. History buffs will relish learning about these islands turbulent past (they were the first in the Caribbean to be colonized by the Northern Europeans), famous historical figures, and exploring restored fortresses and plantations.
